Communiqué on the situation in Maldives – 18 March 2015

The Central Committee of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) at its meeting of 18 March, having taken cognisance of the sentencing of former President Mohamed Nasheed to 13 years imprisonment on grounds of terrorism, is deeply concerned by the explosive political and social
situation in the sister Republic of the Maldives. The MMM has taken note of the statement issued by the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein qualifying the trial of Mr. Nasheed as a « rushed process that appears to being in contravention of Maldives’ own laws and practices and international fair trial standards in a number of respects. »

The MMM, while expressing its solidarity with former President Nasheed, who, it is recalled, was the first democratically elected President of the Maldives, calls on the international community, principally the Commonwealth, to appeal to President Yameen and his government to exercise restraint and allow President Nasheed a fair trial process including his right to appeal withinuniversally acceptable norms of fairness and justice.
This is an issue related to the survival of democracy in the Maldives.
